1. Getting Started
Creating Your Account
- Download HeySquad from the App Store or Google Play
- Tap Sign Up and enter your email address
- Create a secure password (at least 8 characters)
- Verify your email by entering the code we send you
- You're in! Time to set up your profile
Setting Up Your Profile
- Choose a unique username that your friends can find you by
- Add a profile photo so your squad knows it's you
- Write a short bio to tell others about your fitness goals
- Set your home gym for easier check-ins
Setting Your Home Gym
Your home gym is the gym you visit most often. Setting it makes check-ins faster!
- Go to Settings > Select Gym
- Search for your gym by name or browse nearby locations
- Tap on your gym to set it as your home gym
- Your home gym will appear first when you check in
2. Gym Check-ins
How Check-ins Work
Check-ins are the heart of HeySquad! They let your squad know you showed up and put in the work.
- When you arrive at the gym, open HeySquad and tap Check In
- Select the gym you're at (your home gym appears first)
- Add an optional photo of your workout
- Write a note about what you're working on today
- Hit Confirm and your squad will see your check-in!
Location Verification
To keep things fair and honest, we verify that you're actually at the gym when you check in.
- HeySquad uses your phone's location to confirm you're near the gym
- You need to be within a reasonable distance of the gym to check in
- Make sure location services are enabled for HeySquad in your phone settings
- Location data is only used for verification and is never shared publicly
Adding Photos to Check-ins
- Tap the camera icon when checking in
- Take a new photo or choose from your camera roll
- Photos are shared with your squad members only
- Show off your progress, your workout setup, or that post-gym glow!
3. Squads
What Are Squads?
Squads are groups of friends who hold each other accountable. See each other's check-ins, chat together, and compete on leaderboards!
Creating a Squad
- Go to the Squads tab
- Tap Create Squad
- Choose a squad name and optional description
- Add a squad photo if you'd like
- Tap Create and you're the squad admin!
Inviting Friends
- Open your squad and tap Share or Invite
- Share the invite link via text, email, or any messaging app
- Or share the invite code for friends to enter manually
- Friends will need to request to join, and you can approve them
Joining a Squad
- Tap a squad invite link shared with you, or
- Go to Squads > Join Squad
- Enter the invite code you received
- Submit your join request
- Wait for the squad admin to approve you
Leaving a Squad
- Open the squad you want to leave
- Tap the settings or more options icon
- Select Leave Squad
- Confirm your choice
4. Messaging
Chatting with Your Squad
- Each squad has its own chat where members can message each other
- Go to the Messages tab to see your squad chats
- Tap on a squad to open the conversation
- Messages are real-time, so you'll see replies instantly
Sharing Photos in Chat
- Tap the camera or photo icon in the chat
- Take a new photo or select from your gallery
- Add a caption if you'd like
- Send it to share with your squad!
5. Privacy & Security
Managing Profile Visibility
- Go to Settings > Privacy
- Control who can see your profile and check-ins
- Your check-ins are only visible to your squad members by default
Blocking Users
- Go to Settings > Blocked Users
- Blocked users cannot see your profile or send you messages
- You can unblock users at any time from this screen
Reporting Inappropriate Content
We want HeySquad to be a positive space for everyone. If you see something inappropriate:
- Tap the more options menu on any message or check-in
- Select Report
- Choose the reason for your report
- Our team will review and take appropriate action
6. Account Management
Updating Your Profile
- Go to your Profile tab
- Tap Edit Profile
- Update your photo, bio, username, or home gym
- Tap Save to confirm changes
Changing Your Password
- Go to Settings
- Tap Change Password
- Enter your current password
- Enter and confirm your new password
- Tap Update to save
Deleting Your Account
We're sad to see you go, but here's how to delete your account:
Option 1: In-App Deletion (Instant)
- Go to Settings in the app
- Scroll down and tap Delete Account
- Confirm your decision when prompted
- Your account will be deleted immediately
Option 2: Email Request
- Send an email to support@heysquad.app from the email address linked to your account
- Include "Account Deletion Request" in the subject line
- We'll process your request within 30 days
What Gets Deleted
- Your profile information (name, email, username, avatar, bio)
- Your check-in history and photos
- Your squad memberships
- Your notification settings and push tokens
Note: Messages you sent in squad chats will remain but will be displayed as "Deleted User." This ensures conversations remain coherent for other squad members.
Warning: Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
7. Troubleshooting & FAQ
Location Not Working
If you're having trouble with location verification:
- Check permissions: Go to your phone's Settings > HeySquad > Location and make sure it's set to "While Using" or "Always"
- Enable location services: Make sure your phone's location/GPS is turned on
- Try moving: If you're in a basement or area with poor GPS signal, try moving to a spot with better reception
- Restart the app: Close HeySquad completely and reopen it
Not Receiving Notifications
Missing updates from your squad? Try these steps:
- Check app permissions: Go to Settings > HeySquad > Notifications and make sure they're enabled
- Check Do Not Disturb: Make sure your phone isn't in Do Not Disturb mode
- Restart your phone: Sometimes a restart helps refresh notification connections
Can't Find My Gym
If your gym isn't showing up in search:
- Try searching by the full official name of the gym
- Try searching by the street address
- Make sure your location is enabled so nearby gyms appear
- If your gym still doesn't appear, contact us and we'll add it!
How Do I Change My Username?
- Go to your Profile tab
- Tap Edit Profile
- Tap on your username and enter a new one
- Usernames must be unique
- Tap Save to confirm
Forgot Password
No worries! Here's how to reset it:
- On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot Password
- Enter the email address associated with your account
- Check your email for a verification code
- Enter the code and create a new password
